Reports of a cholera outbreak at their camp in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, have been denied by the British Army Training Unit in Kenya, or BATUK.

BATUK also made it clear that there have been no reports of a disease epidemic at the training camp in a statement sent to newsrooms on Friday.

The medical and surveillance teams at the camp have verified with the Laikipia Health Service that there isn't a case of cholera or any other disease that should raise public health concerns. Furthermore, cholera cannot be spread from monkeys to people," the statement said.

"We urge you all to continue observing healthy habits for prevention and protection against diseases and other infections, but please ignore the social media messages."

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that cholera is a highly contagious illness that is spread by consuming tainted food or water.

If treatment is not received, severe cases of the disease can result in fatality within hours and produce severe acute watery diarrhea.

"Most individuals who experience symptoms do so modestly or moderately. A person may not exhibit symptoms for 12 hours to 5 days. A small percentage of individuals experience severe dehydration and acute watery diarrhea. If left untreated, this can result in mortality," the WHO website states.
