Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has mobilized his colleagues to urge the government to give those slain in protests a state funeral.
On Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at a Senate session, the lawmaker claimed that the lives of those who perished had come to an end.
Senator Onyonka informed his fellow lawmakers that since their protests had sparked a fresh dialogue within the political elite, they must work to have a state funeral.
The Kisii senator went on to say that the departed should be given the appropriate respect instead of being punished like criminals.
"I want to ask this house, the Senate, let us make sure that those children get a state funeral," Onyonka said.
"Those were not criminals, these were children who had reached a dead end," he stated.
While supporting the rightful burial of protestors' dead, Senator Onyonka also pointed out that the political elite must lead the charge in bringing about the change that thousands of Gen Zers who participated in the streets were calling for.
The senator from Kisii emphasized that "we, as the political class, must be willing to change for this country to change."
He urged lawmakers to detest certain vices that incite hatred and aid in the embezzlement of public funds.
