12 Buried Alive, 6 Rescued as Mine Collapses in Kanga

Fear has gripped residents of Rongo after a mine buried 12 miners alive.Six of them were rescued in the course of the mission; they were rushed to various hospitals within the county.

The incident happened on the dawn of Tuesday, July 9, in Kanga, Rongo sub-county. Rongo sub-county deputy commissioner George Matundura confirmed the incident, saying the mine collapsed from its entrance. He added that the rescue mission had to be stopped waiting for experts from the county government who were on the way since the mine is deep.

The residents called on the county government to move swiftly to help rescue those trapped to avoid fatalities. "The rescue mission is taking longer than expected because the mine is 750 feet deep, and we still don't have experts to help," said Caleb Onyango, a local rescuer.

The mine is approximated to be about 750 feet deep, with 12 miners still trapped underneath four hours later as experts from the county government are being looked up to help bring them out.
