The County Government of Mombasa, along with Kilifi County, has announced a 10-day transformative activism campaign throughout the region in an ongoing effort to tackle the threat of muguka misuse.
Deputy Governor of Mombasa, Francis Thoya, spoke at the governor's office and announced that a statewide campaign to address the negative effects of muguka consumption, especially among youth, will be launched within the next 10 days.
“To address the social, economic, and health challenges posed by muguka addiction, this movement will bring together communities, leaders, and various stakeholders and health officials,” stated Thoya.
The main objective of the nationwide movement is to mobilize backing for the Crops (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was proposed and introduced by Kilifi North MP Owen Baya. The purpose of the bill is to eliminate miraa/muguka as a scheduled crop.
"We will keep organizing our community to oppose the use of muguka and support the draft amendment bill 2024, which aims to remove Muguka as a crop, despite the National Government's apparent reluctance to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves," Thoya stated.
In addition, the campaign seeks to mobilize the community, increase public awareness, and push for legislative changes that would end the threat posed by the consumption of muguka.
The Deputy Governor further stated that the Mombasa County Government is steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of its people by establishing a drug-free and secure environment for coming generations.
The action was taken after Mombasa, Taita-Taveta, and Kilifi counties' ban on Muguka was lifted by the Embu High Court, pending the hearing and resolution of a petition submitted by Muguka dealers.
