The prosecution requested that the Busia Officer Commanding Station, his deputy, the petty crimes officer, and a businessman be held for 14 days, and the Busia High Court approved their request on Thursday.

The four were arrested and taken to court on allegations that they had defrauded a German of Sh2.6 million.

The prosecution asked the court in a miscellaneous application to detain Chief Inspector Wairia (OCS), Inspector of Police Kibelio (Deputy OCS), Corporal Douglas Rono (in charge of petty crimes), and businessman Paul Wanjala in police custody for two weeks while the investigating officers finished their investigations.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), on Thursday, "the matter had initially been presented before the Busia Chief Magistrate but was later moved to the High Court for directions after the trial court recused itself, citing a conflict of interest, as the respondents were officers of the court."

Judge Justice W. Musyoka of the Busia High Court ordered that the four be detained at the Kakamega police station while the investigations are being concluded.

He also approved the request to have the case tried in a different court.

Shirley Chepkonga, the principal prosecutor, oversaw the case's prosecution.
