ALGERIA'S NEW COACH IS SWITZERLAND'S PETKOVIC
Switzerland After being fired from his position as coach of Bordeaux, a French team that was demoted to Ligue 2 in February 2022, Petkovic, 60, has remained at large.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Thursday that Vladimir Petkovic has been named the new coach of Algeria, succeeding Djamel Belmadi, who was fired.
After the two-time champions unexpectedly lost to Mauritania in their penultimate group match at the Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria fired Belmadi last month.

Sarajevo-born Petkovic also led Switzerland to the quarterfinals of the 2020 European Championship.
In 2019, Belmadi, 47, guided Algeria to the Africa Cup of Nations championship.
The North Africans, however, did not make it to the World Cup in Qatar that year and were eliminated early from the 2022 competition.
Belmadi supervised 64 games over his five and a half years as the head of the national team, with 41 wins, 17 draws, and just six losses.
But for the former Marseille star, failing to secure even a narrow victory in the previous two Africa Cup of Nations proved to be catastrophic.
Algeria will play Guinea and Uganda in June as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, following two friendly matches against Bolivia and South Africa in March.
