DP GACHAGUA MOURNS FORMER STATE HOUSE COMPTROLLER LENAYAPA
Lenayapa was described by Gachagua in his condolence statement as a modest family guy who worked his way up from District Officer to District Commissioner, Government Printer, Permanent Secretary, and State House Comptroller.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his condolences for the death on Thursday of Lawrence Lenayapa, a former State House Comptroller and Kenyan Ambassador to the Netherlands.
Gachagua expressed his sadness over the news of Lenayapa's loss. Lenayapa was a dear friend and former coworker.
"I served in the former Provincial Administration with Lawrence; in fact, we were in the same detail at APTC in 1990 when we underwent our Paramilitary Training," the DP stated.
Lenayapa was described by Gachagua in his condolence statement as a modest family guy who worked his way up from District Officer to District Commissioner, Government Printer, Permanent Secretary, and State House Comptroller.
"The nation has lost a committed public servant who distinguished himself in serving his motherland. I regret losing a good friend and confidant in our family," he continued.
The professional civil servant served as a District Commissioner in Baringo and Kiambu before garnering notoriety in 2020 for his letter to the International Criminal Court objecting to the court's recommended list of candidates for the prosecutor post.
In his sympathy letter, President William Ruto called him a devoted civil servant.
"I send my sincere condolences to Ambassador Lawrence Lenayapa's family and friends on his passing. "A committed public servant has left the country," Ruto wrote in a message posted on his X platform.
"During this difficult moment, our prayers and thoughts are with the family and their loved ones. Peace be with you, Lawrence."
After taking office in 2013, Lenayapa was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to the position of comptroller. He held this position until 2018.
Later, in 2018, he was sent as an ambassador to the Netherlands.
In the past, he served as the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources' Principal Secretary.
As the comptroller, Lenayapa had planned to give Kenya's development agenda—headed by Uhuru—primary attention.
The agenda, sometimes referred to as the "Big Four Agenda," aimed to advance Kenya in the fields of manufacturing, housing, universal healthcare, and food security.
He oversaw Kenya's representation to several other international organizations in the Netherlands and served as the country's Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
During his tenure at State House, he held the position of comptroller, which involved overseeing the House on the Hill's finances and operations.
In addition, he was in charge of managing the House's transportation, security, communications, catering, and general administration.
