In Rarieda, Siaya County, there is a continuing campaign to eradicate illegal brews and other narcotics. This evening, an officer was killed by unruly youngsters, and his handgun was taken.

The dead man was with another cop during a raid to seize the beers, according to a police complaint.
As per the report, "The officers were responding to a tip."

Along with four packs of Super Match cigarettes intended for export, the officers also found brews and twenty-one sachets of Simba waragi.

Subsequently, the locals responded after the culprit, Caren Okumu, sounded an alert.

Using stones and various improvised weapons, they launched an assault on both officers.

In an attempt to frighten the assailants away, the dead officer was shot five times in the air, but in vain.
According to the report, "the officer died from his wounds while the other officer fled to safety but sustained injuries to his shoulder."

With his weapon filled with unidentified rounds of ammunition, the attackers fled.
In anticipation of a postmortem, the body was moved to the mortuary at Lwak Mission Hospital.
As the search for further suspects grew, police were able to apprehend Caren Auma and locate the missing gun.
The attack followed Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa's warning earlier this week that anyone obstructing the crackdown will not be spared by the security services.
