A middle-aged man from Keroka, Nyamira County, was detained and charged following the loss of over Ksh. 3.4 million by nuns in a purported scam scheme.

To allow the investigation into the incident to be completed, the court ordered Edwin Ontomwa, 30, to remain in custody for an additional seven days.

The court heard that Ontwoma and other suspects went up to the nuns at the Ichuni convent in Masaba South, Kisii County, claiming to need money so they could make a key to unlock a treasure box that had been given to them from the United States.

Two more suspects are reportedly being sought in this case, according to a senior investigator managing the case. Ontwoma is also connected to a group of con artists that operate out of Nairobi and Migori counties.

The suspect may face charges for cybercrime offenses, according to the police, who also stated that a forensic audit would be conducted on his phone as part of the investigation into the incident.

The Cybercrimes Act makes it illegal to obtain a password illegally, to gain unauthorized access to computer systems or intercept data, to commit cyber extortion, to commit cyber fraud, and to steal intellectual property.

To obtain additional money, Ontwoma went back to the convent on Tuesday night and was detained. On Wednesday morning, he was brought before Chief Magistrate Eunice Nyutu at Keroka Law Courts.
