Kisii University will host the Nyanza South track and field Championships/Under-20 Trials on Friday, according to regional chairman Peter Angwenyi.

After examining the location and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Angwenyi decided on Kisii University."The running track at Kishii University is in better condition than it is at Cardinal Otunga. Gusii Stadium is currently undergoing redevelopment, which is where we would have hosted this event. We are pleading with the Kisii County Government to accelerate the project," Angwenyi stated.

All competitors from Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori Counties are welcome to compete, according to Angwenyi.

The pole vault, high jump, steeplechase, and hurdles events, he stated, will not take place because of a shortage of equipment. There would be a selection of 24 to 30 athletes, he continued.

The Riooga, Keberesi, and Kiendege camps of Athletics Kenya have sent invitations to athletes to participate. Before the National Under-20 Trials, our main goal is to expose the youth. We would like to see more young people earn spots on the team that will go to Nairobi for the National Championships," Angwenyi continued.

At the Eastern Africa track and field championships held last week at the New Amani Complex in Zanzibar, competitors from Riooga and Keberesi astonished Angwenyi, he said.

James Gechuki of Riooga Secondary School won gold in the men's 800m Under-20 competition, and Daniel Wasike took home the gold in the 200m and the bronze in the 400m Under-18 division. Beatrice Machoka of Keberesi won the gold in the 200-meter under-20 competition.

Simultaneously, regional secretary Thomas Ongwacho has announced that the Nyanza North track and field championships will take place on Saturday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
