Marathon legend Lawrence Cherono Banned For Seven Years

"On May 22, 2022, after training, Cherono claimed in a later written statement that his wife had accidentally given him Trimetazidine in the form of Carvidon tablets instead of the painkillers he had asked for to treat muscle soreness," according to AIU. They continued, saying, "The runner said his wife had received a prescription for Trimetazidine four days prior at a health facility."

Lawrence Cherono, the winner of the 2019 Chicago Marathon, has been suspended for seven years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for three anti-doping offenses.

The FDA added in a statement that the runner had also tampered to obstruct inquiries into his positive test results for the prohibited drug trimetazidine.

ADR 2.5, "Tampering or Attempted Tampering with any part of Doping Control by an Athlete or Other Person," was also broken by Cherono, according to the statement, which also stated that he had produced phony medical records to cover up his positive test results.

The two-time Amsterdam Marathon champion allegedly showed faked medical records purporting to be his wife's prescription for trimetazidine, which he mistakenly took to treat his muscle aches, according to AIU's story.

Cherono produced documentation from the medical center, a Laboratory Request with handwritten information on his wife's prescription drugs and a picture of the underside of tablets in their blister packaging, to bolster his story.

The AIU statement further states that a court-order examination of Cherono's wife's medical center records showed that she had never sought treatment there.

"After facing numerous obstacles in its efforts to obtain the wife's medical records, the AIU obtained a court order in Kenya through ADAK, requiring the medical center to turn over the records. The medical center responded by stating that they could not find any records of the athlete's wife receiving any kind of care beyond May 1, 2022.

AIU head coach Brett Clothier discussed the exercise and noted that other athletes who finished cleanly received justice in the form of a ban.

He stated, "We have been able to uncover the truth and serve the interest of athletes who compete cleanly thanks to determined investigative efforts and valuable collaboration with ADAK. This has been an exhaustive process that has taken two years and a lot of resources."

In July, Cherono was temporarily suspended.

Before the World Championships in Oregon, where he was scheduled to compete for his country in the men's marathon, Cherono was placed on temporary suspension in July 2022.

He finished second in the Boston Marathon in April 2022 with a time of 2:07:21. That was his last event.
