MURKOMEN VOWS TO PUT CAMERAS ON HIGHWAYS IN RESPONSE TO INCREASE IN ACCIDENTS

Amid mounting concerns over the spike in vehicle accidents, Kipchumba Murkomen, the cabinet secretary for roads and transport, has promised to deploy cameras on highways.
Using his X account, Murkomen reflected on a request he made ten years before the Kenya Police's current Inspector General, David Mwole Kimaiyo.
"God is a wonderful worker. I will have the privilege of carrying out the request I made to the IG Police twelve years ago, before to my Senate election," said Murkomen.
Twelve years prior, Murkomen had confided in Kimaiyo about his worries about traffic safety and pushed for the placement of cameras on highways as a prophylactic precaution.
"I want to ask Kimaiyo to put cameras on the majority of the roads. More than accidents, court and police are the things Kenyans fear," the CS stated at the time.
Murkomen onto the Boda area
Speaking earlier today during the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024–2028 inauguration in Nairobi County at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Murkomen blamed the boda boda industry for the majority of traffic incidents.
"We must address the boda boda sector if we hope to resolve the accident issue. The boda boda industry is currently the biggest contributor to accidents, he stated.

Murkomen questioned Kenya's capacity to enact laws of this nature to protect boda boda riders.
"We should ask ourselves how come to our neighboring countries have managed to organize the boda boda sector that everyone wears a helmet," Murkomen stated.
