Kenya Railways has announced significant plans to enhance its passenger transit and cargo services by acquiring new wagons.
As part of these improvements, 50 wagons were recently flagged off at the Port Reitz Freight Station in Mombasa.
These wagons have a capacity of 70 tonnes each, aimed at facilitating the movement of heavy containerized cargo, thereby reducing damage to the roads and improving overall transport efficiency.
This initiative is part of a larger procurement plan where a total of 500 wagons and passenger coaches are expected.
In the next two months, an additional 250 wagons will arrive from China, further boosting Kenya Railways capacity to move cargo and messengers efficiently within the country and East African region.
The introduction of this high- capacity wagons is crucial for improving operations at the busy port of Mombasa, which has been dealing with significant cargo backlogs. The new wagons will help in faster cargo discharge and reduce congestion, facilitating smoother operations at the port.
Additionally, the increased number of wagons will support the transportation of a wider variety of goods, including temperature- sensitive products, thanks to wagons equipped with power plugins for refrigerated containers,
Overall, these upgrades are expected to bolster both domestic and regional trade, enhancing Kenya’s position as a critical logistics hub in East Africa.
The government’s commitment to continuous infrastructure improvement aligns with the vision 2030 development blueprint, aiming to keep the country’s transport sector competitive on a global scale.
