Kisii County, located in the western region of Kenya, is a treasure trove of unique cultural traditions and a vibrant community spirit. Renowned for its rich heritage, Kisii county is home of the Gusii people who have preserved their customs and traditions for generation.
The county is known for its distant Kisii soapstone carvings, which showcase the artistic talent and creativity of the local craftsmen. The stone is mined and carved in Tabaka, South Mugirango. The craft attract tourists and generate income for the community.
The community is deeply rooted in their cultural practices with music, dance and storytelling playing a significant role in their daily lives. For instance, the Kisii believed in a supreme God called Engoro who created the universe and all natural forces.
For circumcised girls would wear iron bells on the day they made their first public appearance after seclusion. They were also used during “ribina” ceremonies (a dance for attracting rain), during funeral dances.
