Respected, Revered and Loved: The Story of Bishop John Okemwa Mairura

Bishop Mairura is an iconic clergy man of the catholic faithful and has served both as a priest for 36 years and as a Bishop for 29 years. These means he has served as a clergyman in the catholic church for the last 55 years which is a truly remarkable fate to achieve.

Bishop John Mairura was born in Nyabururu in 1954 and developed his love for the church and its service growing close to Nyabururu catholic church. The proximity of the iconic old church at Nyabururu and his home grew his passion and formed a strong basis for the reason he joined priesthood.

After finishing school he joined priesthood and was ordained as a priest in 1987 at the age of 33, being a remarkable and apt servant for the catholic church he was appointed as a Bishop for Kisii diocese 7 years later in 1994 and ordained to the position of bishop a year later in 1995.

John Mairura at helm of the Kisii Diocese has been respected for his works in charity and running catholic schools and churches in Gusii region.

As a man of great virtue Bishop John Okemwa Mairura is revered even by politicians who understand his influence on many people in the region. Although very little information is known about the the bishop and the Bishopric because he has led a very private life, he is truely a remarkable chracter.
