Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has forwarded President William Ruto's Memorandum of Referral to the Departmental Committee on Finance and Planning of Parliament for appropriate action on the withdrawal of the contentious Finance Bill 2024/25.
This occurs one day after Ruto sent Wetangula the memorandum, formally starting the process of having the entire bill withdrawn.
"In accordance with Article 115(1)(b) of the Constitution, H.E. the President, vide a Memorandum dated June 26, 2024, referred the Finance Bill 2024 back to the National Assembly for reconsideration with reservations recommending deletion of all clauses of the bill," stated Wetangula in a statement on Thursday.
"The President's Memorandum represents a complete rejection of the bill; the decision was made in order to represent the voice of the Kenyan people who have rejected the bill;
Then, Wetangula gave the aforementioned Parliamentary Committee instructions to start studying the President's Memorandum as well as its issues and suggestions as soon as possible. When the House meets again for regular business, it will present a report to the House.
