Zainabu Afande a form one student aged 15 from Kibera met a boyfriend with whom they dated for two months when schools were closed due to the Covid pandemic. Zainabu reflected that she was very passionate about their relationship and had imagined him and his form 3 boyfriend will grow up and have an incredible love story.

After government announced the reopening of schools, Zainabu borrowed a house key from her cousin, the cousin thought that she was going to do the routine clean up that he was used to.

Little did he know that the young girl was planning on spending quality time with his teenage lover. Being her first time to have sex, she got pregnant. She narrates that she did not think someone can get pregnant from a one-time sexual affair.

Her boyfriend went ahead to clear his high school but neglected her and her kid. He instead moved on with another woman and is now a dead bit father. Zainabu became a teenage single mother who struggles to fend for her child and siblings since she is the first born in a poverty-stricken family.

Zainabu wishes that she had received sex education in school so that teen girls like her could be aware of early pregnancies and the impact of being a teenage single mother.

She also urges parents to not shy away from the topic of sex education, and tell their children the dangers of fornication. The dangers are many as they can contract HIV, STDs and even the early pregnancies that have become a menace in our communities.
