In recent days we have heard that the president has been sidelining the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The rift seems to have grown bigger as MPs allied to the DP have sworn that they will not support the proposed financial bill.

Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba said that she will not support the proposed financial bill as it will lead to closure of businesses.

“The new tax proposals will be a burden to middle income earners because those earning Sh5million and above will be exempted from the income tax,” Gathoni said.

Mbeere North MP Geofrey Ruku said that the four factors of production were not enhanced by the Financial Bill 2024, and also claimed proposed VAT for bread will increase the cost of the household item.

“Treasury proposals that that does not enhance the four factors of production, should be discarded from debate in Parliament,” the legislator lamented.

One of Gachagua’s most trusted lieutenants, Embakasi MP James Gakuya says the Finance Bill 2024 is meant to benefit some regions while leaving others.

“We shall be agitating for equity tax application while sugarcane farmers will enjoy a waiver of Sh 118 billion our farmers can’t get the same privilege,” he said.

The sentiments by these legislators tell us that the tussle between Ruto and Gachagua camps is far from over. About the financial bill we will wait to see whether they will implement their threats to down the bill.
