According to the constitution of kenya2010 (article 53) it is the right of all children to be protected from neglect, abuse, harmful cultural practices, all forms of violence, inhuman treatment and punishments.
However, due to either negligence or impunity to the rule of law, a little attention is being paid by the kenyan people to these children's rights. In the year 2023 baby sagini's case hit the news desks where he was abused by his uncle and grandmother. The case caught the eyes of kisii county lawyers to the baby's resque.
On late may 2024 in Gesusu ward in kisii again another case emerged. A father killed his own blood a ten year old boy. It is claimed that the boy was sent to the shop and the father became angry when the child didn't come early as the father expected. ' He gave him several strokes before he kicked him on the stomach like a ball.' one of the residents said. The boy succumbed to death on arrival at the nearby hospital.
Again in june 2024, in Nyamache district in kisii county a woman took the life of her one year and one month child. The woman claimed that it was his hubby who instructed her to do so.'The woman has been married for only two months, she had no quarrel with anyone' her mother in-law Jane gesare said. 'She did the action when nobody was around' she added.
One of the residents said that, the woman came with the child to that family. Both the mother and his hubby now are in the custody of the police.
What happened to humanity and motherly feelings? How can you take your own blood because of a lover? Are parents supposed to protect their children or harm them? All these are questions ringering in people's minds .
As parents let's protect our children and love them. They are a gift from God and we have no right of taking their lives. The government should come up with a way of advising the parents and also Kenyans. Those parents or anyone who will be found guilty of abusing the children's rights should be held responsible.
