Davido maintains that his well-deserved reputation—which he has worked years to cultivate and invest in—has been damaged by the unfounded accusations, even after the media outlet issued apologies.
After a slanderous article claiming he was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Afrobeat superstar Davido filed a lawsuit against Mediamax Network Limited.
The 'Unavailable' hitmaker has made five requests to the media outlet through his legal team, requesting compensation for the harm done to his reputation.
The bogus report, which was first released as an April Fool's Day hoax, erroneously stated that Davido had been caught trying to flee Kenya with drugs in his private jet.
He had just spent his Saturday night performing at the Raha Fest.
Davido maintains that his well-deserved reputation—which he has worked years to cultivate and invest in—has been damaged by the unfounded accusations, even after the media outlet issued apologies.
The legal team representing Davido emphasized in a demand letter the negative effects of the piece on the singer's global reputation and economic interests in multiple jurisdictions.
To further damage Davido's reputation and moral fiber, they said, Mediamax Limited launched a calculated smear campaign.
The statement begins with the following phrase: "Your statements are false and affect our client's professional reputation by falsely stating and publishing to third parties that, among other things, our client is a narcotics user/trafficker and is engaged in activities that are criminal
"Davido suffers irreversible injury in both his personal and professional lives as a result of these unfounded accusations, which also considerably affect his reputation. One cannot exaggerate how terrible the article is. The stance taken by our client is that the information in the aforementioned article is intended to disseminate untrue, damaging, and disparaging stories about him.
Five demands have been made of the media outlet as a result, including the withdrawal of the libelous item, an unqualified apology, and an end to any similar remarks.
These five requests are as follows:
1. Delete all negative and disparaging comments that you and your guests have made about our client from all of your pages and platforms.
2. Cease and refrain from disseminating false information about our client, whether it comes from you or other sources.
3. As mentioned in the accompanying instructive client letter, extend an unwavering apology to our client.
4. Admit responsibility for slandering our client, and then we will calculate the damages.
5. Pay our client's legal fees and other costs.
Davido has given the media outlet 48 hours to abide by the requests, after which he would pursue all legal options to seek redress.
