Doctors have been on strike for weeks and their actions have ailed the health sector with sickening situation at public hospitals. Services have stalled at public hospitals with the death toll due to the strike rising.

With both the doctors and government taking hard stances it looks like the strike is far from over. Health CS Susan Nakhumicha says she is optimistic that she can broker a long-lasting solution with the doctors to end a strike.

However, Kenyans are suffering the brunt of the doctors’ strike as people are dying in public hospitals and village dispensaries.

A man in Nairobi died because he could not get medical attention from the striking doctors. Maxwell Maronda visited Nairobi Women’s Hospital in Kitengela to seek treatment for bleeding from an extracted tooth which was accompanied by a severe headache.

The doctors at the hospital referred him to Kenyatta National Hospital because his blood levels were too low. At KNH he was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia a rare blood disease. Maronda chose to continue with his treatment at Mama Lucy Hospital due to its proximity to his home.

Maronda fainted at his home and was rushed to Kijabe Hospital while doctors were out in the streets protesting. There he was put into ICU before he passed on days later.

The situation at Kenyan hospitals continue to get dyer at the detriment of citizens. Calls for government to end the deadlock between it and the doctors is in a stalemate.
