FAITH KIPYEGON SHORTLISTED FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS GLOBAL AWARD.

Faith Kipyegon, the current 1,500-meter record holder and Olympic champion from Kenya has been nominated for Sportswoman of the Year at the 25th Laureus World Sports Awards.

Kipyegon competes in this category alongside other well-known athletes such as Sha'Carri Richardson and Mikaela Shiffrin from the USA, Sherricka Jackson from Jamaica, Iga Swiatek from Poland, and Aitana Bonmati from Spain.

Outstanding sports figures from all over the world will be acknowledged at the annual awards ceremony, which takes place in Madrid, Spain on April 22.

Kipyegon made history in the World Championships by becoming the first female athlete to win the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.

On the other side, Sha'Carri, who raced 100 meters from lane nine in her first global final, took home the gold medal.

Polish tennis player Świątek made a comeback to the top of the rankings in 2023 after winning the WTA Finals in Cancun and her third French Open title.

In addition to winning the World Cup and Golden Ball as the best player in the competition, Bonmatí of Spain also took home the Ballon d'Or Feminin, Liga F, and the UEFA Women's Champions League with FC Barcelona Femení.

The Palacio de Cibeles, a spectacular building created by the well-known architectural duo of Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi, will host the Awards Ceremony. "It is among Madrid's most recognizable structures," Laureus stated during the event this year.

The Laureus World Sports Awards have honored exceptional athletes, teams, and personalities for their year-long accomplishments in sports since their founding in 1999.

Celebrities including Lionel Messi and Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who took home the Sportswoman of the Year trophy, were honored at the previous year's awards presentation.

The following players are up for this year's Sportsman of the Year award: Max Verstappen, Noah Lyles, Mondo Duplantis, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi, and Novak Djokovic.

The Spanish women's football team, who won the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2023, has been nominated for the prestigious Team of the Year award.

They are nominated together with other exceptional teams, such as the European Golf Team Ryder Cup, the British football giants Manchester City, the rugby powerhouse Springboks of South Africa, the men's basketball team of Germany, and the racing team Red Bull Racing from Austria.

American gymnast Simone Biles is one of the nominees for Comeback of the Year, along with NBA player Jamal Murray of Canada, rugby player Siya Kolisi of South Africa, football player Sebastien Haller of Ivory Coast, and tennis player Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.
