Politics Watch: Change or Maandamano Will Become a Lifestyle in Kenya

Government should make serious and consorted efforts to resolve the issues being raised by the protesters or risk turning the country into a Maandamano hotspot. Crude efforts to stop the ongoing anti government protests will only fuel them.

President Ruto has given in to demands by Gen Z protestors to fight graft by removing corrupt government officials from office. A few weeks ago the president disbanded his cabinet in an effort to show Kenyans that he was listening to their concerns.

However, this will not be enough as Ruto's ship is sinking at a very high rate. It is paramount that the president goes back to the drawing board and ensure that all issues raised by the citizenry are addressed satisfactorily.

Abductions, coercion and threats will only worsen the situation. So as will police brutality and the killing of peaceful protestors.

Investigations into the Kware killings should be speedy, accurate and be made public to as how more than 40 people were killed and dumped metres away from a police station.

Taskforces and dialogues will not solve the protests, rather providing legitimate solutions to the very legitimate issues raised by protestors might quell the maandamano.

The elephant in the house for president Ruto will be on what direction he takes and how he shapes the current public opinion achitechture. The solution and problem lies with the top man himself.
