After their 13-year-old son perished in the swimming pool at the Silver Slopes Hotel on January 1, 2024, a family in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, is still in shock.

The terrible event is still very much in the memories of the family, who are led by the father of the deceased, Peter Ng'ethe.

"My wife Eunice Wairimu keeps on crying whenever she thinks about our son's tragedy as they had gone together for New Year celebrations at the Silver Hotel when the incident happened," Ng'ethe said.

Wairimu, who was outside Baricho Law Courts on Tuesday, could not contain her emotions when the accused, a hotel caretaker, was charged with negligence in the swimming pool during his arraignment before Senior Principal Magistrate Stephen Nyaga.

After entering a not-guilty plea, John Kiarie was freed with a Ksh. 200,000 bond.

According to Ng'ethe, his son was enrolled in Rwang'ondu Primary School in the Mwea-West Sub-County in Grade 7 and was scheduled to move up to Grade 8 this year.

"He died when we needed him the most...at one point the hotel management had said the body was not there but the body was retrieved at around 11 pm...the boy drowned at around 5 pm," said Ng'ethe.

In their quest for justice, the family is now hoping that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will be able to take additional action.

"The hotel management could have kept a watchful eye on our child when our boy was in the swimming pool," Ng'ethe said.
