Why Gen Zs want you to Boycott Safaricom and Mpesa

In the current schedule released by Gen Zs on how they plan to protest in the coming two weeks, the youths have given 4 days where they are going to boycott Safaricom and Mpesa services. In the current schedule released by Gen Zs on how they plan to protest in the coming two weeks, the youths have given 4 days where they are going to boycott Safaricom and Mpesa services. This can be largely attributed to the fact that President Ruto owns 20% of Safaricom with over 400, 000 shares at the company.

Kenyan youth are outraged and concerned by leaked information that Safaricom is releasing confidential customer information to government agencies. Reliable sources have revealed that information released by the telecom giant aided in abductions and kidnapping of protestors.

Safaricom has also been accused of limiting internet so as to deter pictures and videos of the ongoing protests from being posted online.

The Kenya Constitution 2010 exclusively states that people have a right to privacy, Safaricom has annoyed the Gen Z protestors because they have allegedly released privileged and confidential data to government agencies.

As a private entity with monopoly in the telecom sector in Kenya Safaricom needs to tread carefully. The question remains whether Kenyans can avoid using Safaricom and Mpesa services. We will see!
