WORLD TB DAY 2024, THEME: “YES, WE CAN END TB”
World Tuberculosis Day is essentially observed on March 24th of every calendar year, globally. It is a fundamental moment in March for raising consciousness about tuberculosis (TB) – which is a universal health concern that affects millions of individuals across all the continents.
This year’s theme: "Yes! We Can End TB." The theme carries with it a message of hope. It underscores the prospect of getting back on track in the fight against the TB epidemic. This calls for strong leadership, increased investment in TB control efforts, and the swift adoption of new recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The 24th Day of March every single year serves as a prompt reminder of the ongoing concerted efforts to nib tuberculosis menace in the bud, and the need for continued action to fully exterminate this highly communicable infection.
What causes Tuberculosis? The causative agent for tuberculosis is a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This infection is principally spread through the air, when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, releasing infectious droplets into the air. It is worth noting that, close and prolonged contact with an infected individual accelerates the risk of TB transmission.
Through the creation of awareness, by way of campaigns, educational initiatives both online, on terrestrial TV, and all forms of media, and healthcare interventions, this commemoration day aims to emphasize the significance of early detection, immediate or timely access to quality medical care, and more advanced research for ground-breaking solutions.
“TB is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and remains a major public health burden in many developing countries. Approximately 1.3 billion people smoke tobacco products and most of them live in low- or middle-income countries, where the burden of TB is also very high. The World Health Organization reported that smoking causes 9% of all deaths worldwide. Tobacco smoking has been shown to be associated with TB infection. Moreover, cigarette smoking is also associated with a negative prognosis of TB. Smoking may affect many organ systems, but the lungs suffer by far the most damage. Smoking damages the lungs and impacts the body’s immune system, making smokers more susceptible to TB infection. The occurrence of TB is linked to altered immune response and multiple defects in immune cells such as macrophages, monocytes, and CD4 lymphocytes.”
The fact that millions are affected worldwide, and the trend is still worrisome, World Tuberculosis Day accentuates the need for inexorable partnerships among governments, healthcare professionals, researchers, civil societies, and communities to eliminate TB and ensure a healthier future for all.
How Did World Tuberculosis Day Start?
World TB Day commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his groundbreaking discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis (TB). Back then, TB atrophied Europe and the Americas, claiming innumerable lives. Dr. Koch's discovery paved the way for diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, the fight to end TB.
What is the Significance of World Tuberculosis Day 2024
World Tuberculosis Day is so significant in the calendar of the global health community. It provides a platform to highlight the progress made in TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment while also being cognizant of the inherent challenges that are persistent. Notably, TB remains one of the top infectious killers worldwide, with millions of people falling ill and losing their lives to the disease each year. By raising awareness and mobilizing support, World Tuberculosis Day aims to accelerate efforts towards ending TB as a public health threat, not only in developing countries but also the entire globe.
