Compared to last year, there have been more traffic crash deaths this year.
1,026 people lost their life in traffic accidents between January 1 and March 20, according to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority.
This indicates a 7% rise in road crash-related fatalities over the same period in 2023, when 956 people lost their lives.
With 384 fatalities, pedestrians now dominate the category, up from 323 the previous year.
The motorcyclists who recorded 242 deaths in 2023 are listed below; this is a modest reduction.
Compared to 170 in 2023, at least 225 passengers died in traffic crashes in 2024.
Approximately 77 drivers have perished in traffic-related incidents. When compared to 94 during the same time last year, this is a drop.
82 deaths were reported by pilfering passengers, down from 93 the previous year.
During the period under examination, just 16 pedal cyclists have died in accidents this year, down from 17 in 2023.
Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, disclosed on Thursday that the Police Traffic Department has been implementing different measures to reduce the number of collisions.
"In line with our mandate, the Kenya Police Traffic Department continues to carry out planned and impromptu operations targeting public service vehicles," he stated.
A minimum of 22,958 PSV drivers were detained and charged for breaking the Highway Code.
Consequently, between January 1 and February 29, over Sh299.4 million in court fines and forfeitures were realized as a result of this.
The CS disclosed that the agency and NTSA conduct joint enforcement exercises every two weeks throughout the month.
When he went before the National Assembly Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, he was discussing how to improve road safety by enforcing traffic laws.
Kindiki reported that during the same exercise, driving under the influence was found to be a contributing factor in traffic accidents.
In the same time frame, 1,086 drivers were charged with driving under the influence and placed under custody using breathalyzers.
The head of Interior disclosed that enforcement operations target law-breaking bikers.
This resulted in the traffic police detaining over 6,692 motorcycles and the arrest and prosecution of 5,590 motorcycle riders.
Furthermore, the CS noted that 11% of all traffic crashes include malfunctioning motor vehicles, which are the consequence of both mechanical and human error.
The Traffic Department and the National Transport and Safety Authority have continued to conduct focused operations in order to address this source of traffic accidents.
1,744 drivers were detained in January and February for a variety of infractions, and Sh10,886,167 in court penalties and forfeitures were collected from them.
