Azimio to MPs: We Will Punish you If you Approve Finance Bill
The MP condemned the proposed Finance Bill, 2024 as draconian and punishing, claiming it contradicts Kenya Kwanza's vow to reduce the cost of living.
The opposition has threatened to mobilize all of its affiliated MPs in the National Assembly to vote against Kenya Kwanza's Finance Bill 2024.
The 2024/25 budget will be followed by the Finance Bill, a separate statute outlining revenue-raising ideas that many critics believe will damage industries.
National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed stated on Thursday that they will endeavor to organize their colleagues to oppose the bill when it is tabled.
"Asking for a trip out of the country for the minority side is out of the question starting next week," the Suna East MP stated ahead of the budget reading.
The MP condemned the proposed Finance Bill, 2024 as draconian and punishing, claiming it contradicts Kenya Kwanza's vow to reduce the cost of living.
"The budget that they will table is just a dream of how they will spend the money; the rubber will meet the road when they introduce the Finance Bill, 2024," the MP stated.
According to the MP, the government is penalizing Kenyans even more by imposing high taxes, even though the economy is not developing as expected.
"This is a budget for the executive; what they want to do and where they want to spend is their problem because that is their manifesto; where we come in is when they want to get that money when they want to overtax Kenyans," he said.
The MP reminded MPs who planned to leave the House while the Bill was being processed that "choices have consequences."
"There will be no walkout; minority members must attend parliament and fully participate, whether in the second or third reading," he stressed."This time, absences will not be permitted, and everyone must support the minority's position; if anyone votes against the minority's position, there will be consequences."
