In recent days, Kenya has witnessed a surge in youth-led activism, with Generation Z (Gen Z) at the forefront of various social and political movements. However, the latest wave of demonstrations, while still significant, has not matched the intensity of previous protests.

Several factors contribute to this shift, reflecting  a win for the government over the Gen Z Withdrawal of the finance bill and sacking of all the cabinet secretaries .The proposed finance bill which fore speared the start of the gen Z revolution did not pass.

It was supposed to be signed by the president who after listening to their grievances didn’t sign the bill. Also the removal of all the cabinet secretaries as proposed by the gen Z worked out as the president sacked all his cabinet. This in return may reduce the intense of the gen Z demonstration because some of their grievances has been listened to and sorted.

Fatigue and Disillusionment .Another primary reasons for the waning intensity of Gen Z demonstrations is fatigue. After days of continuous activism, many young Kenyans are experiencing burnout. Sustained protests and the often slow pace of change have led to a sense of disillusionment.

The energy and optimism that characterized earlier movements have been dampened by repeated setbacks and unmet demands .Also Increased Government Crackdowns .The Kenyan government's response to protests has become increasingly harsh. Security forces have frequently used excessive force to disperse crowds, leading to injuries and deaths in some instances.

This heightened repression has deterred many from participating in demonstrations, fearing for their safety and well-being. The threat of arrest and abduction has increased.

Shifting Tactics. Gen Z activists are not abandoning their causes; rather, they are shifting their tactics. Recognizing the limitations of street protests, many are now leveraging digital platforms and social media to advocate for change.

Online campaigns, virtual protests, and digital activism have gained prominence, allowing activists to reach wider audiences and engage in safer forms of dissent.

This strategic pivot has diluted the physical presence on the streets but has not diminished the overall impact of their activism. Also Socio-Economic Pressures .

The socio-economic landscape in Kenya has also influenced the nature of recent protests. High unemployment rates, economic instability .Many are preoccupied with daily survival, making it difficult to sustain prolonged demonstrations.

The struggle to secure basic necessities has, in many cases, overshadowed the drive for broader political and social reforms.

Finally the cohesiveness of Gen Z movements has faced challenges due to fragmentation and leadership disputes. Internal disagreements and lack of unified leadership have weakened the coordination and effectiveness of protests.

While diverse voices and decentralized leadership can be strengths, they can also hinder the ability to mobilize large, coordinated actions. For instance in Nyamira  yesterday  some gen were supporting the protest while others were against the same .

The recent Gen Z protest in Kenya may not have been as intense as before, but this does not signify a decline in youth activism. Instead, it reflects a strategic evolution in response to various challenges and changing circumstances.

While the streets may be quieter, the spirit of activism remains strong, manifesting in new forms and continuing to drive the push for a more just and equitable society.
