The diversions back to Nairobi were caused by "stronger-than-usual tailwinds," according to a statement issued by KQ on Tuesday, June 4.
The weather made it "impossible to safely land the aircraft," according to the statement.
KQ stated that safety concerns prevented it from flying the secondary approach into Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu because its pilots would have had to fly over the city.
"Until airport authorities in Mogadishu alleviated the security and safety concerns, our crew did not choose to use the alternate runway approach overflying the city," the airline said.
But according to Kenya Airways, Mogadishu authorities have subsequently allayed its worries, so "we will be able to land the aircraft safely."
KQ did not provide specifics regarding the number of flights it diverted or the reason it kept flying into Mogadishu in spite of the issues.
Aden Adde's arrival data review revealed that other airlines ran without a hitch.
