KRA DEFENDS THE RAID AT GOVERNOR NASSIR RADIO STATION

After the incursion, Nassir implied that the reason for the tax collector's abrupt attention was his recent move to ban the distribution, sale, and use of khat leaves, sometimes referred to as muguka, in Mombasa.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has justified the raid. Rahma Broadcasting Corporation, the governor of Mombasa,  was raided on Wednesday 29th May.

The exercise, including sending demand notifications to the corporation, was carried out in compliance with established protocols, the taxman claimed in a statement to newsrooms that evening.

KRA's South Region Coordinator released a statement that said, "After a thorough review, it was determined that Rahma Broadcasting Limited was non-compliant in filing and paying various tax obligations."

"Since taxes were due and payable, there have been constant interactions with Rahma Broadcasting Limited management. Even though agreements were made, the taxpayer broke them. The actions taken at Rahma Broadcasting Limited today are thus a regular aspect of KRA's enforcement activities.

After the incursion, Nassir implied that the reason for the tax collector's abrupt attention was his recent move to ban the distribution, sale, and use of khat leaves, sometimes referred to as muguka, in Mombasa.

"Leo watu wamekuja na vitisho. Hii mambo ya kila mmoja anakuja hapa and then ukiuliza wadosi wao wanakuambia ya kwamba sio wao wamewatuma. It means that people are taking orders from elsewhere," said Nassir.

Nassir, who was irritated and angry, stated that he would not bow to pressure to lift the ban for the benefit of the Mombasa people, citing four separate court rulings that supported it.

Nassir's party, the ODM, blasted the ruling class for their purported involvement in the tragedy in a follow-up statement.

To frighten and harass Governor Nassir and his colleagues, who are just concerned with the interests of those they represent, the ODM party would want to denounce the weaponization of state agencies such as the KRA. "The Party is supporting the Governor in his endeavors to eradicate the drug problem from Mombasa permanently," declared ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
