ONYONKA'S ACCOUNT OF HIS ATTEMPT TO SAVE DG ROBERT MONDA FROM BEING IMPEACHED
Onyonka did not cast a ballot during the voting. He had stated in his speech that the issue never should have reached the Senate in the first place.
Deputy Governor Robert Monda was impeached due to several concerns that Senator Richard Onyonka of Kisii has described as having been resolved through no fault of his own.
The Senate had to deliberate and decide on the impeachment because of the country's governance problems, according to Onyonka.
Although he was the one who arranged for Robert Monda and Governor Simba Arati to collaborate following their election, the senator explained that their relationship was not harmonious.
He maintained that the problems at hand were with the county's governance and that, despite his efforts to include the church and its two leaders, no concrete results had been obtained.
If anything, Onyonka stated, the issue ought never to have reached the Senate.
"I have brought up concerns regarding Kisii's governance regularly. I have spoken with Governor Arati and Dr. Monda, as well as church leaders, on several occasions.
"It was me who found these two gentlemen and persuaded them we could win an election. Things didn't work well after that. The problems with this house are a result of Kisii County's failure. This issue never would have arisen," Onyonka said.
The Kisii senator stated that he even asked Governor Arati to draft a recommendation to make sure his deputy is not impeached during their frequent correspondence.
According to Onyonka, their conversations were aimed at formulating a way for them to collaborate by seeking advice from one another.
"Governor Arati and I have spoken often. We were starting to discuss and decide how we could communicate with one another. Suggesting to prevent Dr. Monda from being impeached was one of the tasks I had requested him to accomplish ", he declared.
Onyonka asserts that impeaching Monda will not address the issue of poor governance in the county of Kisii.
Monda lost his seat on Thursday night when the majority of senators decided to support the four accusations brought against him by Kisii County Assembly members.
Onyonka did not cast a ballot during the voting. He had stated in his speech that the issue never should have reached the Senate in the first place.
Monda faced charges of flagrant misbehavior, misuse of office, crimes under national law, and flagrant violations of the Constitution and the law.
He was found guilty on all counts by the Senate. On Wednesday, Monda refuted all four of the accusations.
