Robert Monda, Kisii deputy governor has been impeached by the Senate.

Monda lost his seat on Thursday when the majority of senators decided to support the four accusations brought against him by Kisii County Assembly members.

Since Kenya began its devolution process in 2013, he became the first deputy governor to face impeachment. However, he is the second DG after William Oduol of Siaya to have his case decided by the Senate.

"The result of the division indicates that the senators have upheld the following impeachment charges; gross violation of the constitution and any other law, abuse of office, gross misconduct and crimes under national law."

"Under article 181 of the Constitution, section 33 (7) of the County Government's Act and standing order 86 of the Senate standing orders, the senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Dr. Robert Monda, the Deputy Governor of Kisii County and the deputy governor therefore ceases to hold office," Amason Kingi, the Senate Speaker, stated.

39 senators supported his removal from office on the first and second counts, three opposed, and one abstained.

On the third count, thirty-five senators supported Monda's ouster, seven opposed, and one abstained.

32 senators supported his dismissal on the most recent count, 10 opposed, and 1 abstained.

All of the accusations against the Kisii deputy governor had been refuted earlier.

The deputy governor allegedly asked a local for a bribe of Sh800,000 to help him get employment for his son, according to the Kisii County Assembly.

According to the allegations, "the deputy governor violates the provisions of Article 232, which requires public officers to observe the values and principles of public service, by requesting and receiving a bribe of Sh800,00."

According to the allegations filed by the MCAs, Monda violated section 34 of the Integrity Act, 2012, by using his office to threaten and coerce his family into hiding out of fear for their lives.

They claimed that Monda had often taken county law enforcement officers out of their assigned duties to work for his company.

On Thursday, February 29, the Kisii County Assembly members impeached the DG after 53 members cast votes in favor of the measure.
