President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome met at the State House to discuss a standoff over allegations of judicial corruption.
Following injunctions on his legacy health and housing projects, President Ruto launched accusations against unidentified judges, claiming they were collaborating with cartels to obstruct government agendas.
The president was told that the Chief Justice was open to listening to him to find a long-term solution to the issues, even if the Law Society of Kenya and other legal professionals were adamantly against them. The Chief Justice then suggested a meeting in response to the claims.
Asserting that the gathering jeopardizes judicial independence, Raila Odinga's opposition group was also against it.
However, Capital FM independently confirmed on Monday morning through sources that the Chief Justice attended the meeting at the State House.
The Judiciary and the State House had not yet responded to the meeting.
The president declared last week that he was open to meeting with the Chief Justice.
To deal with the monster that is killing our nation and the corrupt who go to court, he declared, "I am going to lead from the front in the conversation between the executive and the judiciary."Recently, President Ruto has continued to criticize the judiciary, claiming that corrupt judges and other judicial officials who he alleges have been bought off to deliver orders that obstruct his development plan will face harsh punishment from the government.
During a Monday media conference, Koome stated that the nation was being set up for disorder and turmoil by the attacks against the court.
We are on the verge of a constitutional crisis that might spark immense societal unrest if this trajectory is allowed to continue unchecked, Koome continued.
She remarked, "We have written and we will be watching for that conversation. I think the president will give us an appointment."
