Even after education cabinet secretary Hon Ezekiel machogu officially announced that schools will be reopened after the flooding debacle in the country, at least 2,155 schools that were damaged by floods failed to reopen for second term studies.
In Busia, at least nine schools are yet to reopen two weeks of official opening of schools in the country. They are Maduwa, Runyu, Bulwani, Musaa and Musoma primary schools.
In Galole constituency, makere primary schools was swept away after river Tana broke its banks and learners were forced to learn from under the trees.
Area MP Said Buya said that he has sent an appeal for funds to reconstruct the schools and estimated that schools affected by floods in River Tana approximately needs KSH 3.2 billion to be reconstructed.
“At least 3,000 students have not reported to schools and those who have reported are learning under unfavorable conditions,” he said.
Some learners from Kisumu County have been forced to share facilities with residents affected by floods. Ombaka Primary School is one of the schools that people who have been affected by ongoing floods are camping in.
Residents from affected areas have asked leaders to take necessary action to ameliorate the effects of floods in the coast, reconstruct bridges in River Tana and Sabakia that were swept away after the river Tana burst its banks due to heavy rains and flooding in the area.
