The third annual Nyamira 21-kilometer Great Run, which was originally planned for this Sunday, has been postponed indefinitely.

The chairman of Athletics Kenya (AK) Nyanza South, Peter Angwenyi, withheld the reasons for postponing the much-awaited race.

"We decided to postpone the race after consultations with the main sponsor, the County Government of Nyamira," Angwenyi said in a Sunday interview with journalists in Kisii town. We plan to organize the race after the Olympics in Paris, but we will announce new dates soon," Angwenyi stated.

Although athletes were undoubtedly preparing for the competition, the postponement was unavoidable. According to Angwenyi, the participants should now concentrate on the regional track and field championships that take place the next weekend.

"Over 300 athletes attended the event last year," he continued. We hope to expand and improve it this year.

Last year's winners, marathoners Leonard Langat and Winfridah Moseti, took home Sh250,000 in prize money.

Simultaneously, Angwenyi declared that the Nyanza South track and field championships would take place on Friday, May 3. The event will take place at Kisii University, according to Angwenyi.

"But, should the rain continue, we may have to relocate the event to Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho," he said.

He claimed that a few athletes have been asked to compete in the competition from Riooga, St. Peter's Keberesi, and Kiendege Athletics Kenya Youth Camps.

"A few of the athletes are from Zanzibar, where they competed for their nation at the East Africa Under-18 and 20 Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday. To help them get ready for the World Under 20 trials, we have invited them to compete in the championship," Angwenyi stated.

"As a region, we want to have more than five athletes on the Kenyan team for the August World Under 20 championships in Lima, Peru," he continued.

Beatrice Machoka of Keberesi took gold in the 400 meters, while James Gechuki of Riooga won the 800 meters in the regional championship held in Zanzibar.
