The tragic story of a 17-year-old girl who was drenched with acid, raped, and abandoned for dead

"She gave me the number of a man who claimed to have provided her with the information, but when I called, the man also stated he had been notified by someone else and was out of the loop."

On Sunday, April 14, while attending a birthday celebration in Kenol town with a friend, Wairimu (not her real name) was attacked.

The child, who finished her secondary education the previous year, was discovered seriously injured after being abandoned at Kabati along the Kenol Thika highway.

A 17-year-old girl departed her mother's rented house in Kenol on Sunday, April 14.

Along with another female, Wairimu (not her real name), they went to a birthday celebration at a Kenol town club.

A man who knew her advised them to leave the club and head to another one that was more lively during the celebration, so they all left together.

Twilight was falling by then.

However, a man at this other club pushed them to travel to Gikono, which is a few kilometers further.

Wairimu's parents are located in Gikono. She turned down the proposal even then because her parents were waiting for her in Kenol.

That concludes her recollection.

Her mother Wangari, whose name is not genuine, was taken aback when her daughter failed to return home, and what happened after is a fog.

"My daughter was with a friend of hers and she was in good hands," she stated in a phone conversation that same evening at around seven o'clock.

Wangari spent Sunday mornings with her daughter's friend, who dropped by at 6 am on Monday. She informed Wangari that she had heard that Wairimu had been in an accident.

The friend had no further information and had no idea where the accident had happened.

"She gave me the number of a man who claimed to have provided her with the information, but when I called, the man also stated he had been notified by someone else and was out of the loop."

Although Wangari believed the kids were playing a cruel joke on her, the woman friend returned to her home a few hours later and said she had to speak with the mother of a different friend who had been there at the scene of the accident.

However, when Wangari dialed the number her friend had provided her, a woman answered and stated she wasn't the person they were looking for.

When the friend's sister visited Wangari a short while later, she was told that Wairimu had been transported to a private hospital in Thika and was in critical condition; the doctors had refused to treat her until she arrived.

She claimed, "We discovered her in a very bad condition when I approached my neighbor to accompany me."

Wairimu was practically unrecognizable after being bathed in acid and raped.

She had severe damage to one side of her face and a burn hole in her chest from the acid.

On both sides of her ribs, she had what looked like stab wounds.

She also appeared to have scratches from being thrown from a moving car.

Police had discovered Wairimu near a flyover on the major Thika Kenol highway in Kabati.

Wangari claimed that the shock of seeing her daughter nearly sent her toppling.

The hospital treated her with first aid but refused to admit her because Wangari was unable to pay the required Sh100,000 deposit.

Wairimu remained untreated in the facility for two days until a well-wisher assisted in moving her to another clinic in Kenol. Wangari had taken her daughter to another institution in Thika that similarly refused to treat her without a deposit.

Here, Wairimu received prompt medical attention and her recuperation process began.

Wangari fought back tears as she remarked, "We would not have made it this far if it were not for these doctors."

When Wangari was able to communicate, according to Wairimu's father, she detailed her experiences and implicated her friend, with whom she had spent Sunday.

Enraged, the father went looking for the friend and discovered her in a Kenol rental room she shared with a man.

He sought explanations, and with the aid of bystanders, they managed to apprehend her and transport her to the Kabati police station, where she was questioned.

"She acknowledged that she was present when the incident took place. She added that she didn't know the guy who drove them from Kenol and that she didn't get his number right away.

Ultimately, two more guys were taken into custody, one of whom had been discovered in possession of Wairimu's phone.

"The wounds she has incurred suggest that those who harmed her believed they had killed her when they abandoned her," he stated.

The family is now concerned that the perpetrators may target the girl in the hospital and cause her further harm due to an unidentified motivation.

Elena Wanjiku, the sub-county police chief for Kandara, stated that the situation is still being looked into.
