During the ongoing Senate impeachment trial of Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda, a dispute between a father and son regarding a bribery agreement gone bad took place.

When his family encouraged him to bribe the Kisii Deputy Governor Sh800,000 to get the position of commercial manager at Gusii Water Company Sacco, Dennis Mokaya, who was visibly distraught, told the story of how he wasted his entire life savings.

When Mokaya testified against Monda in front of senators over the bribery charges, tears uncontrollably welled up in her eyes as she described how her wife miscarried as a result of the stress they endured and how he lost his lifetime savings.

To raise the required bribe, Mokaya—the first witness for the MCAs—sold his wife's salon in Ruai Town for Sh 500,000. He then moved his family to Kisii in the hopes of getting the position.

He added, "We sold the salon to Peter Mungai, but at first, my wife wasn't happy with the notion because that was our lifetime savings for 13 years. However, I convinced her that the agreement would improve our lives.

With a friendship spanning over three decades, Mokaya's father, Joseph Misati, was well-versed in the Kisii Deputy Governor.

Misati allegedly hired Mondi, the Deputy Governor, who was teasingly said to have had a hand in getting the position because of his relationship with GWASCO Managing Director Lucy Wahito.

Following the negotiations, the family agreed to pay Sh 800,000 to persuade Wahito to postpone Mokaya's appointment.

Mokaya and his spouse amassed Sh 800,000, which was handed in three installments to the Kisii Deputy Governor last year. Of that amount, Sh 500,000 was sent via Mpesa, while the remaining Sh 300,000 was sent in cash.

Even after Mokaya was shortlisted, the Kisii Deputy Governor was unable to find a commercial manager for her, so he turned to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Kisii County Assembly for an investigation.

In an attempt to preserve his long-standing friendship with the Kisii Deputy Governor, Mokaya's father was incensed by his son's decision to report the incident to the investigative agencies.

It's interesting to note that one of Monda's witnesses, Mokaya's father, is scheduled to testify before the senators tomorrow.

Mokaya sobbed violently and said, "This is my lifetime saving, but if he will choose friendship over the truth, then so be it."

"I don't mean any offense to my family, but after 13 years of building the business, we lost everything, and our parents stopped being supportive," he continued.

According to Mokaya, the stressful turn of events caused his wife to become pregnant, which in turn caused him to become depressed.

"My wife didn't take it easy after we were disappointed since it was so stressful. My wife miscarried due to stress after 12 years of trying, but she was expecting," he stated.
