With the passing of former athlete Henry Rono at the age of 72, the athletics community is once again in mourning.
Athletics Kenya said that the renowned athlete passed away on Thursday at a Nairobi hospital after a brief illness in a press release distributed to newsrooms.
Rono competed for Kenya at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, where he won gold in the men's 5000-meter and 3000-meter steeplechase events.
He also won gold in the 10,000-meter and 3000-meter steeplechase events in the All Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, that same year.
Along with making history, he broke four world marks in the three-, five-, and ten-kilometer races.
Unfortunately, Rono was not fortunate enough to participate in the Olympics when Kenya abstained from the Montreal, Canada, and Moscow, Russia, Games in 1976 and 1980, respectively.
Rono was born in Kiptaragon Village, Nandi County. He moved to the US in 1986 and stayed there for 33 years until coming back in 2019.
His passing occurs at a time when the country and the entire globe are still in grief after the deaths of coach Gervais Hakizimana and marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who perished in a horrific car crash on Sunday.
