The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives from a multi-agency team set up a trap for a matatu driver, and on Wednesday, in a dramatic high-speed chase along the Migori-Kisii Highway, the driver managed to beat them.

A police report that Kenyans.co.ke was able to get states that the law enforcement team was tipped off by members of the public about a group that was reportedly smuggling drugs in a matatu along with three other vehicles—two Proboxes and a Toyota Hiace.

The four vehicles were followed by the DCI team, which included officers from the Gesonso Police Station. The police told the suspects to stop when they came to a good spot to set up an ambush, but they disregarded their orders.

Officers attempted to apprehend the suspects four kilometers away from the station during a dramatic high-speed chase that followed along the Migori-Kisii Highway.

On January 28, 2020, during a crackdown along Nairobi Road, a traffic police officer linked to the Kisumu Central Police Station stopped an approaching vehicle.

Upon recognizing that the authorities were nearing them, one of the Probox drivers swiftly departed to escape detection.

To deflate the tires, though, the cops shot two rounds.

In response, the driver, who was only a few meters ahead of the cops, took off running, leaving the car behind.

Bloodstains were discovered by the authorities on the driver's seat, suggesting that the suspect was hurt during the interaction. One suspect, however, who was unable to escape, was apprehended by the police.

Additionally, Ksh30,000 which was thought to be the proceeds of the crime was found at the spot.

The matatu and two other vehicles were being pursued at the same time, and the officers were trying to entice the suspects into going to the closest police station.

The driver of the matatu sensed an impending trap, so he changed course to divert the police. The report states that the cars were discovered abandoned a short distance away.

Following a comprehensive investigation, Ksh37.5 million worth of marijuana was found inside the abandoned car.

Police also found and confiscated reflective license plates that were hidden behind the driver's seat.

The scene was processed by crime investigators from the DCI headquarters located in Nairobi. The cars were towed to the station so that more examinations could be conducted.
