"Given the above, the Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, because you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher," the letter of termination read in part.
Junior Secondary School Teachers who have been demonstrating for permanent employment terms for a few weeks, are beginning to receive letters purportedly terminating their employment.
According to letters that The Star has received, the Teachers Service Commission reportedly sent the interns on June 6th, stating that their employment has been terminated "on grounds of professional misconduct."
"Given the above, the Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, because you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher," the letter of termination read in part.
As at the time of going to press, TSC had not reacted to our attempts to contact them by phone or text on the purported termination letters.
TSC reported that on May 22, after the interns skipped class due to their protests, it gave them show-cause notices.
TSC requested that the interns respond to the matter within 14 days, failing which the planned action will be finally implemented.
"Reference is made to the show cause letter 22 May 2024 in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct," the TSC stated.
"The Commission has carefully considered your response and found me to be unsatisfactory."
The material has even been shared with other instructors in the staffroom, according to a permanent teacher working in Nairobi who asked to remain anonymous.
"Two of our interns who were actively taking part in the protests have received the termination letters," he stated.
