Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi has chastised President Wiliam Ruto's administration for their taxing practices.

Speaking on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in an interview with a local TV station, Sifuna chastised the government for ongoing policy changes that, in his opinion, are burdening Kenyans who are already struggling.

The senator claimed that the government was disregarding the needs of the underprivileged population, who, in his opinion, would rather receive tax money than pay cutbacks because the former is more advantageous to them.

"If you look at people's payslips, they are suffering, deductions have gone so high that people are saying it is more beneficial for them to be paid taxes, and the government to go away with their salaries because the taxes are more than the salaries, this is the situation we are in and right now we are just looking for common sense in government, we hear people such as Murkomen saying they want to introduce tolls to some of our roads, there must be something wrong with you," Sifuna stated.

Sifuna ridiculed the Ruto-led government, saying that they were high on drugs and had lost contact with reality, causing them to enact "unrealistic" tax policies that further burden Kenyans' finances.

The senator also emphasized that before creating and enacting laws that will probably irritate the public, the government should obey its constitutional mandate and pay attention to what the people have to say.

"There is a big problem with this government and we want to introduce some level of common sense, whatever these people are smoking it is not working for them, they either stop it completely, reduce it, or as they say in the streets..'wawache ikauke ama watoe mbegu' because it is not working for them, let us just introduce common sense and listen to the people."If the Constitution begins with the people's supremacy acknowledged, then where is the people's voice? "Where is the people's voice if the Constitution begins by acknowledging the people's supremacy? "What is the purpose of this public participation? You hear the Head of State himself say that the Haiti mission will continue regardless of the court's decisions. That is not the country we want to live in; we want common sense to return, and we want the Kenyan people to once again be in charge of governance. Therefore, I don't see how we can regularize, as any law that is passed must be approved by the people, and they have made it clear that they do not want the housing levy," Sifuna continued.
